Detroit-Stellaantis is recalling more than 240,000 diesel heavy trucks, mainly in North America, to repair fuel pumps that may malfunction and cause their engines to stall.

The recall covers certain 2019 and 2020 heavy-duty pickup and chassis cab trucks equipped with a 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engine.

The recall occurred about a month after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched an investigation into the pump failure. But Stellattis said the company started the recall decision process before the investigation was announced.

The security agency said that in November 2019, truck manufacturer Fiat Chrysler (now Stellattis) issued a warranty notice to dealers, asking them to collect fuel pumps on trucks.

Stellantis said that some pumps wear out and contaminate their mechanical devices with metal chips, causing the engine to stall or fail to start.

The distributor will replace the pump for the owner free of charge, and the owner will receive a letter notification from next month.

Federal safety investigators began their investigation after receiving 22 complaints and two on-site reports of engine stalls. There were no reports of crashes or injuries.
