Ram is recalling 222,000 diesel trucks in the United States to repair a fuel pump defect, which is also the subject of a class action lawsuit.

The brand is owned by global automaker Stellattis and is recalling 2019-2020 Ram 2500, 3500 pickups and Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 cab chassis vehicles equipped with Cummins' 6.7-liter turbo diesel engine.

The high-pressure fuel pump in the truck may fail without warning, causing a sudden stall, which can lead to a crash.

Ram will tell the owner to send the truck to the dealership. The maintenance technician will replace the pump free of charge, update the power system control module software, and check and replace additional fuel system components when necessary.

The owner's notification letter is expected to be sent out on January 1. Car owners can call (800) 853-1403 to contact the car manufacturer's customer service department. The Ram number of this recall is Y78.

The automaker told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that since August 2018, they know of 495 customer assistance records and 6,399 warranty claims related to this issue. It means that it is not aware of any accidents or injuries that may be related to the defect.

A law firm stated that Ram only recalled the trucks after filing a lawsuit on behalf of the owners.

"In our opinion, Fiat Chrysler's large-scale global recall of the same truck involved in our lawsuit is a conclusive evidence," Hagens Berman's managing partner and attorney for the owner of the affected truck is conclusive evidence. Berman said.

"We want truck owners, regulators and the public to know that this defect poses a major risk to the safety of Dodge Ram trucks and other drivers sharing the road," Berman said. "Due to this defect, the fuel system malfunctioned, causing the vehicle's engine to suddenly and unexpectedly shut down while driving, and the vehicle could not be restarted-a serious incident could cause casualties."

The company filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan on October 22.
