This week is the 20th anniversary of the release of the original Rez on the Sega Dreamcast, and creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi commemorates this moment with a new retrospective video.

Although the original development studio of the game-Sega's United Games Artists-no longer exists, Shuiguchi's current studio, Enhance Inc, is behind the video. They almost reunited with many of Tetsuya's former colleagues as well as journalists and fans to talk about the 2001 game and its legacy.

The twenty-minute video provides an in-depth understanding of game development, including how it got its name. Of course, a big topic in the video is the concept of synesthesia. This is a term used to describe the experience of one sense through the stimulus of another sense. This concept is something Tetsuya has brought to many of his games since Rez, including the most recent Tetris Effect.

The video also covers topics such as the game’s infamous Trance Vibrator peripherals. If you don't know-you can buy the original Rez with its own vibration equipment. (Remember, this is in an era when the vibration controller is still a fairly new thing.) The device will vibrate with the music and visual effects on the screen.

This is a fascinating watch, you can check it out below. As for what might be the next step for Mizuguchi and Enhance Studio, at this time last year he joked that he was taking a "new adventure" with the concept of synesthesia. We haven't heard any news since then, but hope we will hear more soon. Before that: Happy 20th birthday Rez!
